WELCOME...

In many ways,
our library is the hub of the learning environment here at Machias Elementary School.  Each class - first through sixth grade - is scheduled for one 40-minute session each week, and each Kindergarten class for one 20-minute session.  Each class session includes a check on overdue books, a lesson in library/research skills or a story time, and a time for checkout and silent reading or other quiet activities.  Students are also welcome to visit the library at other open times each day.

Our Library
has more than 13,000 books and more than 1,000 magazines available for students, teachers and parents to check out.  Our collection contains a wide variety of titles in our Fiction (F), Non-fiction (000-999), "Everybody fiction and non-fiction (E), "Blue-tab" Easy Readers (EASY), Series (SERIES), Reference (R or REF), Beginner's basket (BASKET) and magazine (MAG) sections.  There is also a professional collection of more than 800 books, magazines and video recordings which are available for teachers.  Many of these items are also available for parents.

Our Library
is also the location of many events throughout the school year, including staff meetings, evening "Read-Ins", PTG meetings, Book Fairs, voting on election days, and meetings for community groups such as Boy Scouts and Campfire.

Throughout my formal education I spent many, many hours in public and school libraries.  Libraries became courts of last resort, as it were.  The current definitive answer to almost any question can be found within the four walls of most libraries.
